Bellflower wildlife – the circle of life

Remember when we found the garter snake in the backyard?

I found her again, unfortunately, she was dead this time. It looked like some kind of crushing trauma to the head; I didn’t see any evidence that whatever killed him had made any attempt to eat the carcass.

She’d grown several inches in the past year and was well over 2′ long, and looked to be decently fat and in good health. The warm weather in the past 2 days probably brought him out to catch some sun; a true Californian to the end.

I buried her under the plum tree, where we first met.

Goodbye, little friend. It was good to share the land with you.
