A bad month for winter coats

I have lost two winter coats in the past two weeks.

For someone that knows me at all, losing one of them would be cause for alarm. Before you start fitting me for a padded room, though, hear me out. The second one went to a good cause.

I witnessed a car accident this morning. pickup vs. bicycle. The kid on the bike is 15. I was one of the first on the scene, and he was in shock and shivering, so I offered up my pullover. It’s a nice Descente fleece that I’ve had for years, but there was no real sentimental value, just another warm pullover. Normally I would have had my “regular” winter coat on, but I lost that a couple of weeks ago. Shorter, but not as dramatic, story. Anyhow, I gave up my fleece to help warm the kid up; he ended up getting it bunched up under his head on the asphalt (don’t move victims unless you’re an EMT).

What with one thing and another, my jacket ended up going to the hospital with him. I noticed it at the time, but wasn’t going to make a scene about it. Kid needed it more than I did. I hope he’s OK.

By the way, among conversations you never want to have to have with somebody’s mother “Hello, I am calling to tell you your son’s been in a traffic accident”. Moms do not take this news well.
