Chicken coop, day 3 – Bring me your huddled chickens

We only got an afternoon worth of work in on the coop today, because I spent the morning at Maker Faire Seattle. Fun. Much smaller than the Bay Area one. I hope they do it again next year.

Back to the show.

With the superstructure done, it was time to concentrate on the roosts and nests. There was a normal amount of hemming and hawing about design, but in the end, it all just sort of came together when it needed to.

The roosts seem pretty sturdy, although we really need to work on toenailing, because one of the feet is pretty messed up. Strong, but ugly. One of those things where if you didn’t know it was there, you’d never notice it, but it was a real pain at the time.

The nests were dead simple. We even had a scrap 1×8 lying around, so we got to put some re-used wood from Hilltop into the build (I like it when I can do that).

With the nests complete, all that’s left are the two ends (which involve some plywood cuts), framing in the side door, and then sheathing the thing in hardware cloth.

The end is in sight; hope we can move this thing when the time comes.
