Bees, hives getting up and running

The Eastern Hive seems to have gotten a bit faster start; they have already shoved all of the grass out of the entrance of the hive, and have extracted a bunch of dead bees and dumped them for the ants as well.

I even saw a bee pulling a bee carcass across the dirt in front of the hive — those are some industrious creatures.

When the sun came out, though, both hives were really… er… buzzing with activity. The Western Hive seems to have landed on its many feet as well, and had a lot of in and out activity at the entrance.

I think that I was able to see some bees coming home with pollen, but I can’t be certain. There do seem to be a lot of tentative flights of 10′ or less coming from both hives.

Later in the day, I noticed that The Western Hive had also dumped a lot of bee carcasses out front, although a lot of the grass was still shoved into the entrance.

Kristi mentioned that she saw a wasp quietly investigating the hives — I hope that the bees can defend their turf.

I’ve noticed that the bees are much more orange/yellow (and less black) than I was expecting. They are a really pretty light color, with black right around the stinger. Very cute.

Everyone in the family is starting to notice bees hanging around, so reports of bee sightings come in at regular intervals.

In all, from our external vantage point, things seem to be happening with the hives, and that makes us both feel better.
