He’s a gamer, Bob

A funny thing happened this Christmas.

For years, I’ve been heading over to Anthony’s house the day after Christmas for a GameStop shopping spree and a couple days of hard videogaming. This year, I spent some time with him, sure, but we never really played much in the way of games.

On the other hand, we gave Brett a 3DS for Christmas (it has Netflix!), and he and I got Pokemon (Black for him, White for me). We have spent the past week playing constantly. He can’t really read yet, and he had a couple of flubs early on (releasing a Pokemon is forever, B). But he can really play! He works his way through it in fine style, and we’ve been neck-and-neck working our way through each section of the game. I’ve usually been able to stay one gym ahead of Brett, but that’s mostly because I’m spending time strategizing how to beat each one. He pretty much just talks to everyone in the game and fights them if necessary. We certainly follow different strategies, but they both work.

I wonder if he’d be able to play a Japanese game just as easily. Hmm…

Anyway, the point is that I think that I have a new videogame buddy. Yes, we both need to watch out for keeping active, but really neither one of us can sit around playing for more than a couple hours anyway.

I didn’t expect such a positive experience when Brett got his own game system. But I’m definitely having a lot of fun gaming with my son.
