New Pronto is here!

You know that you’re a geek when you spend half a day programming your TV remote.

The new Philips Pronto TSU 7000 arrived today. It’s a bit larger than the trusty TSU1000, but still very manageable single-handed.

The colors are pretty whiz-bang; I imported my old Pronto configuration, and have been studiously removing all the “compass rose” screens and pushing those functions to the hard buttons. I am also making use of the 2 extra “screen bottom” buttons, which are allowing me to add “chapter” changing to the “fast forward” area. In all, I’m doing more removing of screen buttons than adding. I don’t know what I’ll do with the extra real estate. I’ll figure something out, I’m sure.

I found a few color icons I can use to replace the old black and white ones. That will be a nice upgrade.

It’s a little irritating that the pause button got moved. I’m trying to figure out whether I want to rebind it, or whether I will just learn to use the new one. I thought the old way was much cleaner.

The new rig came with an RF Extender, so in theory I will be able to put all the components in a closet somewhere and drive the whole thing over RF. Just thinking about that makes my head hurt, so I am going to ignore it all for now.

A note: the RF Extender was supposed to come with 4 dual IR LED emitters. From what I can glean, these are mono 3.5mm plugs with 2 IR LEDs at the other end (which I assume both share power and ground). I can build these pretty easily, or buy new ones (there are also stick-on ones).
… later.

For now, I pretty much have the same functionality that I used to. I can start upgrading as I use the new remote and find places that need tweaking.

The software all works on my Mac (running ProntoEdit NG under VirtualBox). I need to get Super Nudelist running again.

It’s the start of a new age.
