Narcissus and Echo

Let’s face it; any activity that involves someone putting thoughts or photographs into a public forum has some root in self-love.
Why would I care that Person X went to a party last night, or that Person Y is taking a bathroom break?
Well, if I was at the same party and had a great time hanging out with Person X, I might care.
Or if I was thinking about hitting the head myself, I might care that Person Y is currently befouling same.

But generally, things that get posted to <insert social networking engine here> can mostly be full text-replaced by “Look at me! Am I hot or not?”

Having said that, think about all the conversations you have ever had with anyone. How many of *those* could be reduced to the same thing? Humans are social animals. We spend our lives living in close proximity to one another, and we constantly seek out other humans who like us and are like us so that we can sit around telling each other how good it feels to be near others of like mind, so that we don’t have to be alone in the world.

Is blogging *inherently* a form of narcissism? Well, probably, yes. But that is not to say that:
a) there are not well-thought-out articles of some meaning posted to the web here and there, and
2) that narcissism is necessarily a Bad Thing.
