EndWar is a fun game

On a whim, I decided to pick up a used copy of Tom Clancy’s Endwar at gameStop.

in short, it’s pretty fun.

It’s an interesting take on the classic “Panzer General” style strategy game, where you are given a certain set of units and must command them to achieve some kind of mission objective. There are limited reinforcements, so you pretty much have to “make do” with the units you start with. The game seems paced properly, and it’s oh, so pretty.

The best feature, hands down, though, is the voice commands. “War at the speed of thought”. You say things like “Unit 2, Attack Hostile 1” and off goes unit 2 to do your bidding. A very few of the commands must be entered by button presses (where a given unit should take cover, for instance), but most of the battle can be commanded from the overhead map view and spoken commands.

This makes for a very immersive experience. You really feel like you’re in command of these troops.

… and the game is $20 these days. Gotta love that.
